El Precio del Silencio = Cancion Protesta for Human Rights

blog Image

Colombian rockers Aterciopelados have gone into the shadows for me --sorry Rio lovers!-- but that doesn’t mean they quit doing great stuff. In a effort to bring awareness to Human Rights issues, they’ve re-recorded/re-written "Cancion Protesta," my favorite song  from their Latin-grammy winning album Oye, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration Of Human Rights.

"El Precio del Silencio" was produced by Andres Levin and features talent and singers from all over the world, including Mexican darling Julieta Venegas, Cucu Diamantes and Pedro Martinez of Yerba Buena, as well as Natalie Merchant, Stephen Marley, Jurassic 5’s Chali 2na, and many more.

Argentinean poet, activist and ex-polical prisoner Alicia Partnoy wrote the words actor Laurence Fishburne uses to open the video. The EP is available for sale online and all proceeds benefit Amnesty International.

Time to stop downloading illegally and do some good. I must confess the video made me laugh a little, any thoughts on Andrea’s pancita peeking through?

Oliver Stone Preps Documentary on Hugo Chavez

blog Image

Oliver Stone likes to stay busy chasing down the world’s most controversial figures while adding to President Bush’s list of least favorite films. Remember Fidel in Commandante and more recently the biopic WHis next project features Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez and the leftist movement in Latin America. Stone was present in February when Chavez mediated the release of hostages held by the FARC in Colombia and has been tagging along other  Chavez  functions as he continues to film for the documentary expected to premier next year. Word on the street is that Stone is also working on a docu of Iran’s president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Vigil and March Against Hate This Sunday

blog Image

Hate victim JoseSucuzhany

Unfortunately, members of the Latino community have been the target of monstrous hate crimes this past month in New York. Some of you may recall the group of Long Island teenagers who attacked and fatally stabbed an Ecuadorian immigrant because he was Latino.

And now, just weeks later, news of two Ecuadorian brothers who were attacked on the way home from a bar in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Jose O. Sucuzhanay, 31, and Romel Sucuzhanay, 38, were walking home from a bar with arms interlocked when three strangers yelling anti-gay and anti-Latino slurs jumped out of a SUV and attacked them. The assailants used a bottle and aluminum bat, while also kicking and punching, and left Jose brain dead. He was removed from life support yesterday, but is still listed under critical condition.

In response to the vicious attacks, Make the Road New York (MTRNY) is organizing a massive march/ vigil MTRNY’s Community Park in Bushwick this Sunday, December 14th at 2 p.m. The march will be to the corner where the incidents happened (Corner of Bushwick Ave. and Kossuth Place).

Gameboy Reggaeton

blog Image

The second annual Blip Festival is here, where ultra geek electronic music and visuals based on video games (the more archaic, the better), low-res technology and more is put on display. More than 40 artists from all over the world will converge for the 4-day festival, taking place at The Bell House in Park Slope.

Friday night will be particularly exciting with the New York debut of Barcelona-based duo Meneo, whose specialty is "gameboy reggaeton" with songs such as "amorrr" "papi" and "culo." Or, as they describe themselves (in the third person) on their homepage:

"The band members are Rigo Pex, who plays direct gameboy reggaetón and electro-dancehall, produced on stage with vocoders, keytars and lo-fi toys. Along comes VJ Fruity Booty, a liger (50% lion, 50% tiger) with a visual mission to flash your eyes with his made-to-measure vjing application that’s been the envy of many on several video art festivals."

Meneo is performing a late show on Friday along with Nuyorker and Balun buddy) Minusbaby, aka Richard Caraballo (a buddy of Balun).

Maya Angelou on Celia Cruz

blog Image

I just finished reading Dr. Maya Angelou’s new book, Letter To My Daughter, a collection of life lessons from Angelou to the daughter she never had (she had one son). In the book she dedicates a chapter to the great Celia Cruz, who she says taught her everything she knows about going on stage. More after the jump.

Obama Picks Latino Bill Richardson as Commerce Secretary

blog Image

Pablo Martinez Monsivais/Associated Press

President-elect Obama declares New Mexico governor Bill Richardson the 'key strategist on all the issues we work on.' The former Energy Secretary and U.N. envoy is the first Latino named to the new Cabinet.
We can't help but wonder if Richardson will be the only Latino politician selected to rep team Obama, or if there are more to come.
Whatever the case, it was cool to hear Richardson's acceptance speech in both English and Spanish
